James Naismith holding a basketball. November 6, 1861 Almonte, Ontario. Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame. Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame. Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame. Oklahoma State Sports Hall of Fame.
College Basketball Hall of Fame. Naismith was teaching at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts and he was asked to develop an indoor activity that would keep the students active during the brutal New England winter and provide an alternative to calisthenics. The game Naismith devised "basket ball" -- and its original thirteen rules were presented to his fellow classmates, where it became a huge success. The game has since become the most popular indoor sport in the United States. In 1898, Naismith became the first college basketball coach of the University of Kansas basketball team, compiling a 55-60 record.
He also spent 20 years as an education professor at the school. Though he was wholly responsible for its invention (as well as for the creation of the University of Kansas basketball program), Naismith never sought to capitalize on its success or bask in the glory of fame. His only reward was the enjoyment of those playing and watching the game.
Perhaps Naismith's greatest thrill with regard to the sport came in 1936 when he was sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to witness basketball become an Olympic sport at the 1936 Games held in Berlin. He also witnessed as the birth of both the National Invitation Tournament (1938) and the NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Championship (1939). He has been the recipient both during his lifetime and posthumously of a plethora of awards and honors, including the naming of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he was an inaugural inductee in 1959.
